Privacy policy: I Need A Poo
Last updated 18 October 2026
- You can browse the map without an account.
- If you sign in, we keep your name and email address. Your email is never shown to anyone; your display name is shown next to your reviews and on the leaderboard.
- Your location is used on your phone to find toilets near you. We don't store where you are.
- The app shows ads from Google. In the UK and EU you choose whether they can be personalised.
- We don't sell your data. You can delete your account in the app at any time.
1. Who we are
I Need A Poo (“the app”) is made by Luminko, the trading name of Kenwin Lam, a sole trader in the United Kingdom. Luminko is the data controller for the personal data described here.
Contact: support@luminko.co.uk
2. What we collect and why
| What | Why | Legal basis (UK GDPR) |
|---|---|---|
| Google account details when you sign in: your name, email address and Google account ID | To create your account, stop fake or duplicate ratings, and let you edit or delete what you've posted. Your first name becomes your display name, which you can change. | Contract: providing the account you asked for |
| Your display name | Shown publicly next to your reviews and on the leaderboard. | Contract |
| Reviews, ratings, notes and toilets you add or edit | Shown publicly in the app; that's the point of the app. | Contract |
| Your location | Used on your phone to show toilets near you, sort them by distance and give directions. When you send a rating, your position is sent once so our server can check whether you were at the toilet (within 150 m). We keep only the yes/no answer, not the position. When you look at the map, the area on screen is sent to load the toilets in it; it isn't linked to your account. | Legitimate interests: making the app work and keeping ratings honest. You can refuse location permission and still browse. |
| A random app ID created when you install the app | Linked to things you send (ratings, reports, feedback) to stop spam and abuse, and to count usage per day (app opens, “I need a poo” presses, map loads) so we know how the app is used. It isn't your phone's advertising ID or hardware ID. | Legitimate interests: preventing abuse and improving the app |
| Reports about reviews or toilets | To moderate content. Includes the reason, any details you type and your app ID. | Legitimate interests: keeping the app safe and accurate |
| Feedback you send from Settings | Your email address, your message, the app version and your app ID, so we can reply and fix problems. | Legitimate interests: support |
3. Ads
The app may show ads from Google AdMob. Ads are never shown on the map or when you press “I need a poo”. Google may collect information such as your device's advertising ID, IP address and device details to show ads, measure them and prevent fraud.
In the UK, EU and EEA the app asks for your consent before ads are personalised, using Google's consent form. You can change your choice at any time in Settings → Ad privacy choices. If you don't consent, you'll still see ads, but they won't be personalised.
Google acts as an independent controller for this data. See how Google uses data from apps that use its services. You can also reset or delete your advertising ID in your phone's settings.
4. Maps and directions
The map is provided by Google Maps. When you use it, Google receives information such as your IP address and the map area being viewed, under the Google Privacy Policy. “Directions” opens the Google Maps app or website.
Toilet locations come partly from OpenStreetMap. We fetch that data on our server; your phone doesn't contact OpenStreetMap.
5. Who we share data with
- Cloudflare hosts our server and database (stored in Western Europe). They process data only on our instructions.
- Google, for sign-in, maps and ads, as described above.
- Everyone who uses the app can see your display name, reviews and the toilets you add. Never your email.
- Authorities, only if the law requires it.
We don't sell your personal data.
6. International transfers
Cloudflare and Google may process data outside the UK. Where they do, the transfer is protected by UK adequacy regulations or the UK's approved contract clauses.
7. How long we keep it
- Your account: until you delete it.
- Reviews: until you delete them or your account.
- Toilets you add: they stay on the map after you delete your account (they're public places) but are no longer linked to you.
- Daily usage counts: 13 months.
- Reports and feedback: as long as needed to deal with them, and no more than 2 years.
- Backups: deleted data can remain in our hosting provider's backups for up to 30 days.
8. Your rights
You can ask to see, correct, delete or move your data, or object to how we use it. You can do much of this yourself in the app: edit your display name and reviews in Me, and delete your account in Settings. For anything else, email support@luminko.co.uk; we'll reply within one month.
If you're unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
9. Children
The app isn't meant for children under 13, and you must be 13 or over to create an account.
10. Changes
If we change this policy we'll update the date above, and tell you in the app if the change is significant.
